Statement: I grew up in Chino, CA, where I was pretty bored for
most of my formative years. There were a few things that captured
my imagination though, here they are in chronological order: Sit
'n' Spin, Legos, riding bikes, Hip Hop, Dungeons and Dragons, Hendrix, The Eagles, and photography. I began earnest
creative work
at the University of California, San Diego, where I learned from Phel Steinmetz to always work on the edge of convention - something I re-learn with every project. I transitioned to film/video and have worked as everything from a P.A. to an Art Director in the low-budget feature film world (look me up on IMDB). In 2001, I was afforded the opportunity to run the Teen Producers Project for the Media Arts Center San Diego - an after school program for at-risk and low income students. I really can't say enough about that program and what it does for young people - giving them experience and confidence that are hard to acquire in other places. And for me, TPP piqued my interest in media education, community organizing and documentary. Since moving back to Los Angeles in 2004, I have begun contracting with Current TV, almost completed grad school at U.S.C. and... wait for it... operated camera on the Oscar nominated documentary, The Garden (Directed by Scott Hamilton Kennedy, 2008). My interests range from experimental doc to cinema verite to straight journalism. I have developed an excellent photographic eye which I couple with an empathy for doc subjects. I'm down for whatever will make people think and engage with the world and am always hoping to make someone's life a little more understood. After earning some more stripes out in the world, it is my goal to return to education and help facilitate the learning of students who have not had the opportunities that I have had. - Sebastian Hernandez elATsebastianhernandezDOTnet |
